a brief update
it's been a while since I blogged a non picture post.
We've been sick the past 3 weeks. Jackson had a nice week long bout with RSV, that kept Jodie and I off from work. he's healthy now, but Jodie and I are full of mucus.
A few things about being a parent:
1. yesterday morning, as my tall, skinny, wearing only her underwear, and crying Riley stood in her room and cried because she'd bumped her shoulder into a door or something, I just smiled and laughed and hugged her. I told her I loved her and hugged. I was sure I would miss these times.
and then, just a few minutes later as she was coming out of her crying fit, she looked at me and said, "I want to be a teenager."
WOW.
I hugged her and told her she'll be a teenager soon enough. Let's just stay a big girl for now, ok? she wiped a tear and said ok.
Last night, we went to El Maguey, our favorite place to eat. As we snacked on chips and salsa, Jodie gave Jack some small chips to nibble on. He must have swallowed one too soon because he started choking on one, trying to cough it up. He's crying a bit, and we're trying to get him to cough it up. Completely calm, Jodie reaches in with her finger to try and sweep it out, and must have pushed too hard because he pukes in her hand and over himself.
I grab a pile of napkins and start cleaning the mess. I'm wiping, she's helping the still coughing Jackson. I think only one other table in the busy restaurant knew what was going on. As I'm wiping, I tell Riley to keep eating her chips and dip, while we help Jackson.
I'm wiping up a pile of white sticky Jack Puke, when he blasts another stomach emptying churn, and Jodie heroically catches it in her hand. Without speaking, I drop a big wad of paper napkins in her hand, and wipe it up. I drop another pile onto the floor to clean up round two of puke.
Jackson finally works the chip out of his throat. I wipe up the floor, (which was hard cause it wasn't sticking to the napkins) Jodie wipes up Jackson. I ask for the pile of used napkins, ball them all up and drop them in the trash can in the kitchen. We calm Jackson down, Jodie hands him off to me so she can wash her hands, and I remind Riley to wipe her face, she has cheese sauce on it.
Such is the life of a parent.

Wow, good story! Glad everyone was okay! I have two kids the same age as yours. Our best puke story was when we took the kids to an outdoor swap meet just east of Los Angeles (for a cultural experience). That morning our 3-year-old was complaining he didn't feel good, but we thought he was just being ornery because he didn't want to go. As we're strapping him into his car seat for the 45 minute ride home he throws up all over the place. So I stripped him down in the middle of the madhouse drive-in-movie-theater/swap meet parking lot while my wife cleans up his seat. Thank goodness no more on the way home!
